Exfoliation is an important part of skin care regime. With time, skin develops a layer of dead skin with accumulated dirt and oil, which in turn clogs the pores. It also serves as a breeding ground for bacteria that leads to skin problems like blackheads and acne. Scrubbing peels off the outermost layer of the skin unveiling a fresh, glowing skin sans debris. With the recent wave of naturopathy and Ayurveda in the beauty industry, more and more people are substituting chemical-laden over-the-counter products with their natural, homemade counterparts. Moreover, store-bought products are full of sulphates and parabens, which can do more harm than good to the skin. The hero of any scrub is the abrasive grainy substance, which sloughs off dirt and dust from the skin. The same can be achieved with the help of sugar, a common grainy product found in every kitchen. You can try some homemade sugar scrub packs for your regular exfoliation process.

Sugar contains hydroxide acids and glycolic acid, which are known to have great cleansing properties. Since sugar contains active exfoliating properties, you need to balance it with an emollient to prevent excessive drying up of the skin. Though it should not be much of a concern as the natural sweetener has intrinsic moisturising properties as well!

Why Is Sugar A Good Skin Exfoliator –
-It is a natural humectant, which hydrates the skin by drawing moisture from the air and pumping it into the skin.
-Glycerol acid present in it protects the skin against sun damage and delays ageing.
-Being an excellent exfoliator, sugar sweeps of all the dirt and bacteria and promotes skin regeneration.
-It is gentler on skin than other salt scrubs, therefore ideal for sensitive skin as well.
-It fights ingrown hair and prevents them from growing back.
-It can be safely used to cleanse and nourish the whole body including hands and feet, and not just the face.
-Sugar is equally effective on all skin types – oily, dry, combination and sensitive.

A sugar scrub, if applied at least once a week, brings to the fore a cleaner, radiant and youthful skin. Remember to gently rub the scrub in soft circular motions on the body skin for 2 minutes and wash it off with cold water.
You can make DIY scrub with sugar as the main ingredient and other common products readily available in your kitchen to provide a well-rounded treatment for your skin.

Here are some easy, DIY skin scrub recipes, which can be made in less than 10 minutes and applied anytime in the comfort of your home. Be careful not to get tempted as these scrubs are sweet enough to eat!

4 things u should avoid in periods

0

Molinaro warns against using douches to cleanse yourself during your period, and using it as a method of hygiene altogether. “In general, douching is not a necessary practice and can disturb the normal microorganisms of the vagina, leading to infections,” he explains. Don’t Use Cleansers With Artificial Fragrance

Do not use:

Using soaps, sprays, or creams with perfumes can also cause vaginal irritation and should be avoided,” says Molinaro. “If you have a strong vaginal odor, it is best to see your gynecologist in case there is an infection or imbalance that can be treated.

Get A Wax

“As if a bikini wax wasn’t torture enough try doing it while you have your period — double trouble!” says Jaime Knopman, MD over email. “Your pain receptors are extra heightened and your skin extra sensitive when you have your period. Add to that a pretty messy situation and waxing while on your period is not something you should do.”

Drink A Lot Of Coffee

There’s nothing like a morning cup of coffee, but if it’s that time of the month, you might want to temporarily skip your latte. Caffeine can worsen discomfort from cramps and bloating, as it constricts blood vessels, which can worsen menstrual cramps, according to Livestrong.

How To Do A Facial At Home Using Natural Ingredients

Is the stress starting to show on your face? With the busy lives and hectic schedules that we’ve built for ourselves, it’s almost impossible to keep their effects from showing on your face and skin. One of the best ways to beat this is taking an hour out to focus on yourself and take care of your skin with a facial. One of the better ways to do it is at home, without worrying about shelling out some big bucks or getting an appointment at a good spa. . Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how you can give yourself a facial at home.

How To Give Yourself A Facial At Home – A Step By Step Tutorial

Step 1: Cleanse

Cleansing your face is crucial part of any kind of skincare routine. It helps get rid of dirt, excess oil, and makeup, giving you a clean slate to work with and preparing your skin to be more receptive to the ingredients that you are going to nourish it with.

Method

  1. Select a cleanser that is suited for your skin type. If you have oily skin, use an oil-free cleanser. For Dry skin, use a mild foaming cleanser. People with combination skin can use face washes that are specially formulated for combination skin types.
  2. Rinse your face with warm water.
  3. Take a pea-sized amount of your facial cleanser and gently rub it in an upward circular motion onto your skin.
  4. Splash the product off with cool water.

What We Recommend

Use raw honey to cleanse your skin. Honey has excellent antibacterial and hydrating properties that will leave your skin feeling soft, clean and supple. Simply dampen your face, spread the honey over it, massage for about a minute or two and rinse it off. This suits all skin types.

 Step 2: Exfoliate

Exfoliating is another extremely important step when it comes to facial. Exfoliating your skin helps remove all the dead skin cells that tend to clog your pores. It helps instantly brighten your face by revealing the younger and healthier layers of your skin. You can also make your own exfoliators using natural ingredients that are already in your pantry.

Method

  1. Once you’ve cleansed your face, select an exfoliator that is appropriate for your skin type.
  2. Take a coin-sized amount of your exfoliator and gently rub it in an upward circular motion onto your skin.
  3. Do this for a couple of minutes, but remember to be gentle. You do not want to over-scrub your face.
  4. Splash the exfoliator off with cool water.

What We Recommend

For Normal Skin- Combine 1 teaspoon ground oatmeal with a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of olive oil.

For Oily Skin- Combine 1 teaspoon of honey with a teaspoon of water and a teaspoon of sugar.

For Dry Skin- Combine 1 teaspoon of honey with a teaspoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of ground almonds.

Step 3: Steam

Starting with a steam is the best way to kick off your at home facial. The steam helps relax your skin and open up your pores. This allows your skin to release toxins and soak up all the goodness that the facial has to offer. Follow the instructions listed below to safely steam your face.

Method

  1. Take a bowl of very hot water. Ensure to use oven mitts or a cloth while handling the pot so that you don’t burn yourself.
  2. Place a towel over your head and lean over the pot so that the towel creates a tent to hold the steam.
  3. Lean over the pot to steam your face. Do not lean too close as the vapors can be quite hot.
  4. Do this for 5-10 minutes. If you feel the steam starting to cool during this time, blow into the pot so that it lets out more vapors.

What We Recommend

Add a couple of rosemary essential oil, or herbs such as chamomile or rosemary sprig to give your steam treatment a kick. The aromas created by these ingredients can be extremely uplifting and will relax you while they clarify your skin with their antioxidant content.

Step 4: Apply Your Face Mask

Once you’ve steamed your face, your skin is ready to take on some nutrition. Applying face masks gives your skin the boost it needs to stay healthy and look radiant. The constant contact your skin has with damaging factors such as pollution, the sunlight, and chemicals, can dull it down and make it age prematurely. Face masks help counter these factors and keep your skin well-nourished and youthful. The best thing about masks is that they’re customization to treat various skin issues.

Method

  1. Pick a DIY mask suited to your skin, preferably one that’ll help address any skin issues that you have.
  2. Spread the mask onto your face in a thin layer. Avoid getting too close to your eyes or your mouth.
  3. Turn on a humidifier or draw a bath to soak in while the mask works its magic.
  4. After the time indicated has passed, splash the mask off with cool water.

What We Recommend

For Normal/Combination Skin- 1 tablespoon honey + 1 tablespoon Yogurt

For Oily Skin- 1 tablespoon multani mitti + 1 tablespoon honey

For Dry Skin- ½ a banana (mashed) + 1 tablespoon honey

Step 5: Tone

Now that your face has soaked up all the goodness that the face mask had to offer, it is time to seal your pores to keep any dirt or toxins from settling in your skin. This is where a toner comes in. Toners help remove any residual dirt while sealing your pores. This helps address issues such as acne and visible pores. A toner also helps make your skin more receptive to hydration.

Method
  1. Pick a toner that is suited to your skin type.
  2. Take a cotton pad and use it to apply the toner onto your face. Avoid the area around your eyes as you do this.
  3. The cotton pad will help spread the toner while also removing residual dirt.
  4. Allow the toner to dry naturally.
  5. If you have combination skin, you may limit the use of the toner to your T-zone.
What We Recommend

Combine half a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with a teaspoon of water and use this to tone your face. Apple cider vinegar balances the pH of your skin while closing your pores.

Step 6: Moisturize

This is the last step to your at-home facial and one that the treatment would be incomplete without. Your freshly revealed and nourished skin will need hydration for lasting radiance. A moisturizer will help hydrate your skin and lock moisture in so that your skin is less prone to damage.

Method

  1. Select a moisturizer that is suited to your skin type.
  2. Take a pea to a dime-sized amount, depending on the consistency and apply this onto your face in upward circular motions.
  3. Let your skin absorb the moisturizer.

What We Recommend

For Normal Skin- ½ teaspoon almond or olive oil

For Dry Skin- ½ teaspoon coconut or argan oil.

For Oily Skin- ½ tsp Jojoba oil, or 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel.

Tips And Precautions To Consider While Doing A Facial

  • Do not apply makeup immediately after treating your skin to a facial. Give your skin a couple of hours (at least) to breathe.
  • While following the steps listed above, follow the indicated amount of time for each ingredient or product you use.
  • Give yourself a facial every week to keep your skin healthy. The natural ingredients do not damage your skin. On the contrary, they help improve your skin’s texture.
  • Keep everything you need ready before you start your facial so that you do not miss any steps and can efficiently complete the treatment.
  • Create a calm atmosphere for yourself. This will help release stress and will boost the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • If you experience any discomfort from the ingredients you use, rinse it off and cleanse your face immediately.

Pampering yourself has never been easier. Follow the steps mentioned in this article to achieve glowing, flawless skin. A little self-care is all it takes to bust stress.

How To Remove Stretch Marks After Pregnancy: home Remedies

0

Home Remedies To Remove Pregnancy Stretch Marks:

There are certain effective home remedies you can try to reduce the appearance of postpartum stretch marks.

1. Oil Treatment:

Massaging the affected areas with oils make your skin smooth and help reduce the stretch marks. Some of the popularly used oils include:

Olive Oil: Olive oil moisturizes and exfoliates your skin. It also improves the blood circulation and removes stretch marks to a great extent (3).

  • Take some oil in your palms and gently massage the area.
  • Let it remain for 30 minutes so that the vitamins A, D and E in the oil are absorbed into the skin.
  • Take a bath after the massage.
  • Though it is a time-taking process, it gives you results when you follow it regularly.
  • Or you can also prepare a mixture of olive oil, water and vinegar, and apply in the nights.

Vitamin E Oil:

  • Extract the oil from vitamin E capsule.
  • Mix with any moisturizer you use regularly and apply on the stretch marks.
  • On regular usage, it gives effective results by fading off the marks.

Castor Oil:

  • Apply castor oil on the stretch marks and massage the area gently in circular motion for about five to ten minutes.
  • Use a plastic bag to cover the area, roll a hot water bottle on it for about 30 to 40 minutes. The heat opens the pores and the oil gets absorbed into the pores.
  • Clean the area and repeat it every day for at least a month to see good results.

Other Oils: Various oils like coconut, almond, avocado, castor and vitamin E can be mixed in equal proportions and applied on the skin. You can also use them to massage the region. You can also use any one oil and use as a massage oil.

Essential Oil Treatment:

  • Take regular oils like almond or coconut.
  • Add a few drops of essential oils like rose, geranium, lavender, myrrh or helichrysum.
  • Use this mixture to massage on the stretch marks for at least 30 minutes. It will help reduce the stretch marks quickly.

2. Aloe Vera:

Aloe vera promotes healing and soothes your skin. Use fresh gel rather than the one available in the market.

  • Rub it directly over the skin, leave for 15 minutes and wash it off using lukewarm water. Apply on the affected areas regularly.
  • You can also prepare a mixture of one-fourth cup of aloe vera gel with oil from five vitamin A and ten vitamin E capsules. Rub it over the skin until it is completely absorbed. Apply it twice a day.

3. Honey:

The antiseptic property of honey works in reducing stretch marks.

  • Take a small cloth and apply honey on it.
  • Place the cloth on the affected area and let it remain until it turns dry.
  • Rinse off using warm water.
  • Or you can prepare honey scrub by mixing it with salt and glycerin. Apply it on the stretch marks, leave until it dries and rinse off using water.

4. Egg White:

Egg white is rich in protein, which helps rejuvenate the skin and makes it look fresh.

  • Beat two egg whites using a fork.
  • Clean the affected area with water and apply a thick layer of egg white using a makeup brush.
  • Let it dry and then rinse off using cold water.
  • Apply some olive oil to keep the skin supple and moisturized.
  • Repeat it every day for at least two weeks. It helps improve your skin tone, and the marks fade away slowly.

10 Dos and Don’ts for Beautiful Skin

1. The Golden Rule Do: Make sure you always (and we mean always) remove your makeup before hitting the sheets. The skin needs to breathe overnight. And makeup prevents that, as leaving it on overnight clogs the pores which may cause blemishes and/or blackheads. Don’t possess a makeup remover? Just put some olive oil on a cotton pad and gently massage the oil onto your face to get rid of the makeup and dirt.
Don’t: Forget that exfoliation is indispensable. At least once or twice a week, exfoliate your skin to remove the layers of dead skin, sure to leave you with a more healthy glow and brighter skin. You can also apply a paste of walnut in powder form with yogurt to exfoliate your skin, as the antioxidants present in walnuts help remove dirt and promote radiant skin.

Never forget to exfoliate your skin and remove the makeup before calling it a night.

2. Sun and Skin

Do: Apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Since a lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems, you have to protect your skin from the sun. Make sure the label reads ‘non comedogenic’ or ‘non acnegenic’ so that the product does not tend to block pores.

Don’t: Skip the sunscreen, whether it’s cloudy or cold outside (no excuses). If you’re heading to a beach or around reflective surfaces like snow or ice, lather your skin up with some more sunscreen with SPF of at least 30.

3. You are What You Eat

Do: Keep a note of what you put on your plate Eat fresh fruits greens, sufficient protein and vitamins. A diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats and sugar promotes radiant skin. Consider a low-sugar diet, which can keep insulin levels down, allowing cells to maintain a healthy skin balance.

“Don’t: Eat spicy and fermented foods, salt, citrus fruits, fried food. Instead favor blander foods such as rice, oatmeal and applesauce”, advises American author and Ayurveda physician, Vasant Lad, in The Complete Book of Ayurveda Home Remedies.

4. Sweat It Out!

Do: Exercise regularly. Running, jogging and yoga will give your body the necessary blood circulation, and also accelerate the cleansing process of your entire body. You will notice a glow on your face after working out. Racing against time? Just take a brisk walk around the block.

Don’t: Skip skin care before and after a workout. Apply a toner to help minimize oil production before heading out. Exfoliate after, and then apply shea butter or olive oil to moisturize the skin.

5. Beauty Sleep

Do: Try to sleep at least 8 hours every night. If you don’t get enough shut eye, your skin gets tired just like you – it sags and you get bags. So don’t risk it. You can also apply honey on your face twice or thrice a week to naturally soothe and heal your skin.

“Don’t: Forget to wash and moisturize your face before going to bed”, recommends Dr. Rahul Nagar, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. “For dry skin, use milder cleansers that are free from alcohol. Apply lots of moisturizer, and avoid hot water as it dries out the skin excessively.”

6. H2O to The Rescue

Do: Hydrate yourself. Drink lots of water daily, at least 8 glasses if not more. Also, eats fruits and vegetables that have a high water content such as watermelon, cucumber, orange, strawberry, grapefruit and cantaloupe Ayurveda physician, Vasant Lad recommends to “drink water from a blue colored bottle”, since it has a cooling effect.

Don’t: Ignore rose water. It helps prevent and reduce eye puffiness in the morning, maintains pH balance and naturally hydrates your skin if you spritz it on during the day.

7. Goodbye Acne

“Do: Wash your face with warm water, three times a day, and gently massage your face in circular motions, ensuring that the cleanser contains alpha hydroxyl acid or beta hydroxyl acid. Face packs that contain (fuller’s earth) work really well too. After cleansing, pat dry and apply a lotion which contains benzoyl peroxide”, suggests Dr. Zaheer Ahmed, Dermatologist, Max Hospitals. Benzoyl peroxide appears to be effective due to its antibacterial actions.

Don’t: Pop pimples because it can lead to more swelling, redness, and even scarring. Feel a pimple is on its way? Just clean the area with rose water, and place a chilled green tea bag for 10 minutes. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, make sure you clean them frequently to keep oil from clogging the pores around your eyes and nose.

8. Go Back to Your Roots

Do: Use Ayurvedic scrubs to nourish the skin, and help it breathe better. Luckily for you, everything you need is already in your kitchen. 2 tbsp chickpea flour, ½ tsp turmeric powder, a pinch of camphor and sandalwood with some rose water/milk/water is your perfect skincare pack. Yes, the secrets of beauty lies in ancient Ayurveda.

Don’t: Neglect the basics. Make Sudarshan Kriya your beauty mantra. Yes, it’s that easy. Just breathing right could rid you of spots and pimples. Nidhi Gureja, Art of Living, says “Sudarshan Kriya is a breathing technique which incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath that harmonize the body, mind and emotions. This helps releasing accumulated stresses, and each individual’s experience is different.”

9. Spa Day Everyday?

Do: Have a regular skin care regimen. “For dry skin, use a fresh cherry mask. Apply the pulp of fresh cherries on your face before going to bed. Leave for 15 minutes and wash with lukewarm water”, adds American author Vasant Lad.

Don’t: Forget to pamper yourself. A gentle facial massage with oils could work wonders. Depending on your skin type, choose oils from mustard coconut almond or Kumkadi as they are excellent nourishing agents which help to get glowing skin. Better still – switch on some soothing instrumental music. After 20 minutes, what do you have? Beautiful skin and a relaxed you.

10. Healthy Habits

Do: Take out time for yourself, and try to avoid stress as much as possible. Have you ever noticed that when you are stressed, you tend to break out more? This is because stress causes your body to produce cortisol and other hormones, making the skin more oily. Practice stress management techniques like breathing exercises yoga and meditation. The more you meditate, the more you radiate.

Don’t: Neglect your jawline and facial for just 5 minutes a day, perform a few facial exercise you can jut out your lower lip in such a way that wrinkles are created on the chin, then lower your chin to your chest. Another exercise that works wonders is to look up towards the ceiling and pout. It stretches out the muscles making the skin more firm. “18 till I die”, why not?

The more you meditate, the more you radiate.

You’re dressed to perfection, yet you need something to complete the look. Your smile! While we spend so much time and energy on honing our bodies and looks, we forget to express our inner joy and happiness. “Keeping a smile on your face will help maintain the tone of your facial muscles and skin. People may say you look 10 years younger than you are!”

How to Make Whitening Cream

0

Spending time outdoors in the sun may feel good, but it can be very damaging to your skin. While skin cancer is obviously a major health concern, the sun can also cause dark spots or an overall darkening of your complexion. If you want to lighten or brighten the look of your skin, a homemade whitening cream can do the trick. Best of all, you can whip one up with ingredients you already have in your kitchen. Try making an easy whitening cream with lemons for oily skin or almonds for dry skin to help brighten up your complexion.

Ingredients

Lemon Whitening Cream

  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) lemon juice
  • 1 cup (250 g) unsweetened, organic yogurt
  • 2 to 3 drops of rose water

Almond Whitening Cream

  • 5 to 6 almonds
  • 1 cup (250 g) unsweetened, organic yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon (7 g) honey
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) lemon juice

Preparing Lemon Whitening Cream

Mix the lemon juice and yogurt.

Add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of lemon juice and 1 cup (250 g) of unsweetened, organic yogurt to a small bowl. Stir the two together so they’re well blended.

For best results, use fresh lemon juice.

Lemon juice contains vitamin C, which is known to slow down the cells that produce melanin in the skin. That helps prevent the skin from darkening or tanning.

Yogurt contains lactic acid, which can help exfoliate and lighten the skin.

Stir in a few drops of rose water.

When the yogurt and lemon juice are mixed, add 2 to 3 drops of rose water. Mix well until the mixture is fully incorporated.

Rose water helps calm inflammation in the skin, which can reduce any redness.

Transfer the cream to a jar and refrigerate. Once the rose water is mixed in, spoon the cream into an airtight jar or other container. Because the cream contains yogurt, it must be stored in the refrigerator. It should stay fresh for 1 to 2 weeks, but toss it if you see any signs of mold.

If you find that the recipe makes too much for you to use up before the cream goes bad, you can reduce all of the ingredients in half to make a smaller batch.

Apply the cream in the evening.

For the best results, use the cream daily. However, because the lactic acid makes the skin more sensitive to the sun, it’s best to use it at night. Gently massage it into the skin before bed, and wash it off in the morning with warm water and your usual cleanser. Some skin types are sensitive to lactic acid and vitamin C. If you have sensitive skin, it’s best to apply it every other night until your skin is used to the ingredients.

Mixing Almond Whitening Cream

  1. Grind the almonds in a food processor. Place 5 to 6 whole, unsalted almonds in the bowl of a food processor. Process the nuts until they reach a fine, powdery texture, which should take 5 to 10 seconds.
    • If you don’t have a food processor, you can use a blender or coffee grinder to grind the almonds.
    • Almonds are rich in Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that can prevent sun damage that darkens the skin.
  2. Mix the ground almonds with yogurt, honey, and lemon juice. Add the ground almonds to a small bowl with 1 cup (250 g) of unsweetened, organic yogurt, 1 teaspoon (7 g) of honey, and 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of lemon juice. Stir the ingredients together until they are fully blended.
    • Yogurt is rich in lactic acid, which exfoliates the skin to lighten dark spots.
    • Honey contains antioxidants, which help prevent sun damage that can darken the skin.
    • Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which can help prevent the skin from darkening.
  3. Place the cream in a jar and store it in the refrigerator. When all of the ingredients are mixed, transfer the cream to a jar with a lid or another airtight container. Keep the cream in the refrigerator to prevent the yogurt from going bad.
    • The cream should stay fresh for 1 to 2 weeks. However, if you see any signs of mold, discard it.
    • You can cut the recipe in half if you find that it makes more than you can use in 1 to 2 weeks.
  4. Smooth the cream on before bed. Because the lactic acid in the yogurt can make your skin sensitive to the sun, it’s best not to use it during the day. Apply it in the evening before you go to sleep for the best results.
    • If you have sensitive skin, start out using the cream every other night or just a few times a week. The lactic acid and vitamin skin may irritate your skin, so it’s best to go slow until your skin is used to it.
    • Be sure to wash off the cream in the morning with warm water and a gentle cleanser. Apply sunscreen before heading outdoors.
